DLA weapon-system mapping (FOIA WSDC)

Which weapon systems a National Stock Number is used on — DLA's monthly WSDC (Weapon System Designator Code) FOIA bulk file. One row per (NSN, weapon system).

wsec, wsgc, and wsic are returned raw and undecoded — DLA publishes no decode table in this file's layout. Absence is not proof an item is unused on any system. No prices or contracts here; use dla.contract_history for awards.

Source & conduct: Source: DLA FOIA Electronic Reading Room WSDC bulk file. Owner browser download. Classification and export-control carve-outs applied at ingestion.

There is a portal for this: DIBIQ puts DLA award and item context in front of a bidder as pages rather than tool calls. Same subscription, same refusals.

Coverage figures populate from the ingestion pipeline after bin/refresh-coverage.py writes a dataset_coverage row for dla.weapon_systems.

Query parameters

nsnstring

National Stock Number, exact match -- the primary question this tool answers. DASHED (5340-01-678-8659) or bare 13-digit (5340016788659) both work; this table stores the BARE form (DLA publishes it undashed in these files) and the tool matches either, so a format difference ca…

niinstring

National Item Identification Number (bare or dashed 9-digit), exact match. Use when you have the NIIN but not the supply class. A 13-digit NSN pasted here is reduced to its NIIN half rather than matching nothing.

wsdcstring

Weapon System Designator Code (1-3 alphanumerics, e.g. JAN) -- the REVERSE lookup: which NSNs are used on this system. Bounded and paged: the largest system in this corpus carried 146,691 items when the source file was measured on 2026-09-05, so the rows returned are a PAGE, n…

weapon_systemstring

Weapon system NAME, matched as a case-insensitive infix over the published system names, of which a 2026-09-05 measurement of the source file found 2,514 ("NIMITZ" finds "NIMITZ CLASS CVN"). Minimum 3 characters; a shorter fragment is refused rather than run slow. Response alw…

limitinteger

Max records to return (default 25, max 50)

offsetinteger

Rows to skip before the page starts (0-based, default 0). Read `has_more` to know whether another page exists.

The full input schema is served by the MCP server at connection time.

What you can ask

  • Before quoting an open DIBBS line, which platforms is this NSN mapped to?
  • Which NSNs are used on a given weapon system designator code?
  • How broad is an item's platform use as one input to make/buy?

Schema

Fields from the live catalog entry for dla.weapon_systems. Sample values below are synthetic schema shapes — not live FOIA rows.

Field Type Description
nsn13stringNational Stock Number, BARE 13-digit as DLA publishes it in these files (the tool accepts dashed or bare input) — the item identity / join key to dla.dibbs, dla.flis, dla.prior_prices and dla.contract_history
wsdcstringWeapon System Designator Code — DLA's 1–3 character code for the weapon system (e.g. JAN). 2,514 distinct codes on the 2026-08-17 file
ws_namestringThe weapon system's published name (e.g. NIMITZ CLASS CVN). Stored once per code in a 2,514-row dimension table rather than repeated on all 9.2M rows: wsdc → ws_name was measured to hold exactly, 0 codes with more tha…
wsecstringEssentiality code, RAW AND UNDECODED. Observed values {1,3,5,6,7}. DLA publishes no decode table for it in this file's layout and no meaning is asserted anywhere on this surface
wsgcstringGroup code, RAW AND UNDECODED. Observed values {A,B,C}. No meaning asserted
wsicstringIndicator code, RAW AND UNDECODED. Observed values {T,F,Z,L,Y,K,J,S,R,W,G,M,H,X,P}. No meaning asserted
item_namestringThe item's controlled nomenclature phrase (max 19 characters observed). A function of nsn13 — measured 0 NSNs with a conflicting item name
system_item_countintegerHow many NSNs are mapped to this weapon system in total, so a single returned row carries the size of the system it names. The largest is 146,691
first_seen_stampdatePublication stamp of the earliest DLA file this mapping was observed in
last_seen_stampdatePublication stamp of the latest DLA file still carrying it. Each monthly file is a complete SNAPSHOT, so a mapping whose last_seen_stamp is older than the newest ingested file has been REMOVED upstream — an item taken…

Illustrative synthetic record from catalog.json — identifiers are fabricated so a real FOIA row is never reproduced on this public page.

Use it for

  • Read an open DIBBS solicitation in context: before quoting, see whether the item is on an active carrier, a legacy airframe, or nine platforms at once
  • Qualify a bid list by platform — find the NSNs used on a given weapon system, then cross them against the open board
  • Judge an item's breadth of use as one input to a make/buy or stocking decision, alongside dla.contract_history's award record
  • Trace a part you already supply across every platform DLA publishes it against
